[해외축구]메시, 53억 탈세 유죄…감옥행은 피해

【서울=뉴시스】권혁진 기자 = FC바르셀로나에서 뛰고 있는 세계적인 축구 스타인 리오넬 메시(30)가 탈세 혐의로 유죄 판결을 받았다.

 AP통신 등 외신들은 25일(한국시간) 스페인 대법원이 메시에게 징역 21개월을 선고했다고 밝혔다.

 메시와 그의 아버지인 호르헤 메시는 지난 2013년 탈세 혐의로 스페인 세무당국에 고발됐다. 당시 스페인 언론은 두 사람이 2007년부터 3년 간 조세피난처를 이용해 420만 유로(약 53억원) 이상의 세금을 납부하지 않았다고 보도했다.

 지난해 7월 징역 21개월과 벌금 370만 유로(약 47억원)를 선고 받은 메시는 대법원이 항소를 받아들이지 않으면서 유죄가 확정됐다.

 다만 메시가 수감되는 일은 없을 것으로 보인다. 스페인 법에 따르면 징역 24개월 이하의 초범은 집행유예로 징역을 면해준다.

전세계적인 인기를 구가하고 있는 메시는 법원의 이번 결정으로 이미지에 심각한 손실을 입게 됐다.  

 바르셀로나측은 논평을 내고 "메시의 가족들은 구단의 지원에 감사함을 전했다. 우리는 메시와 그의 아버지, 그의 가족과 함께할 것"이라고 밝혔다.
